New details have emerged surrounding a Hull City return for Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt.
The Tigers have been operating with one hand tied behind their backs this summer due to financial issues.
Hull were handed an embargo preventing them from paying transfer fees for new additions until January 2027, severely complicating any business they were planning to do.
Recent times have been kinder to the Tigers, after it was revealed by Alan Nixon that Oli McBurnie was likely to sign for them after getting clearance from the EFL.
Hull could soon add another forward to their ranks, one who is quite familiar with the MKM Stadium.
According to Hull Live, Sergej Jakirović and Co. are in advanced talks with Leeds United to strike an agreement for Gelhardt’s services.
This will be in the form of a season-long loan, with it understood that the 23-year-old expressed his determination to make a return to East Yorkshire after enjoying a positive temporary spell last term.
Jakirović is thought to have been impressed with Gelhardt's impact last season and believes that the striker can put up even greater performances under his coaching next year.
The young forward’s salary reportedly doubled after Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League, which somewhat complicated the transfer, but a middle ground has now been reached.
The 2024/25 campaign ended in perilous fashion for Hull, retaining their Championship status on just goal difference.
This naturally led to quite a deflated atmosphere at the MKM Stadium, with not much to celebrate amid an intense relegation battle.
However, Gelhardt provided a bright spark for the Tigers’ supporters after joining the East Yorkshire outfit on loan in January.
The 23-year-old scored five goals in 20 appearances for Hull, including a crucial brace in their 2-1 victory over Preston North End.
An equaliser in an eventual 2-1 triumph against Oxford United was also another high point and saw Gelhardt become one of the club’s most important players during the run-in.
Naturally, this makes the Leeds United striker’s return a welcome one, with his heroics still fresh in the memory of the Tigers’ faithful.
With McBurnie now also likely to join, Hull have very quickly added two dangerous operators to their frontlines who will no doubt provide guaranteed goals next season.
In the midst of a transfer embargo, Jakirović and Co. have managed to salvage some respectable business, which will boost their chances of avoiding another relegation scrap in the 2025/26 campaign.
