A goal against Porto convinced Porto to sign him, and he featured intermittently for the side that won the Champions League in 2004.

After leaving Porto, he played for Braga, Benfica and Gil Vicente, earning one international cap.

His coaching career started at Varzim in the Portuguese second division, and Wolves represent his ninth managerial job.
