Newcastle beat Brighton 3-1 to dent Seagulls’ European bid | OneFootball

Newcastle United defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 in the Premier League at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

The visitors made a lively start and nearly struck within two minutes, with Nick Pope denying Jack Hinshelwood before Carlos Baleba rattled the woodwork from distance.

At the other end, the Magpies came close themselves to opening the scoring in the 11th minute but William Osula fired just wide.

However, a minute later, Osula broke the deadlock for the hosts after Bruno Guimaraes’ through ball drew Bart Verbruggen off his line, allowing Jacob Murphy to square for the Dane to head into an empty net.

In the 24th minute, Dan Burn doubled the Magpies’ lead, heading home Guimaraes’ corner on his 150th Premier League appearance.

Moments later, Pope nearly handed the visitors a lifeline as his clearance struck Hinshelwood and hit the post before Joe Willock was denied at the other end by Verbruggen.

Just before the break, it nearly became 3-0 as Sven Botman nodded Lewis Miley’s delivery across goal to Malick Thiaw, but Verbruggen produced a close-range save to deny him before Danny Welbeck headed wide at the other end.

Shortly after the restart, Pope was called into action again as he denied Kaoru Mitoma from close-range before Hinshelwood saw his header drift off target.

In the 61st minute, Hinshelwood pulled one back for the visitors, finishing off Welbeck’s cute pass in behind.

Moments later, Pope kept out Charalampos Kostoulas’ acrobatic effort before Yankuba Minteh squandered a glorious opportunity to draw the Seagulls level from six yards out.

Deep into stoppage time, Harvey Barnes completed the scoring after he was found by Yoane Wissa to seal the victory.
