Newcastle United delivered a confident home performance to see off Nottingham Forest 2-0, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou still searching for his first victory with the club.
The first half was a quiet affair, with neither side able to create clear-cut chances. Joelinton’s far-post header and Chris Wood’s miscontrolled finish were the only notable openings, leaving the scoreline goalless at the break.
After the interval, Newcastle began to assert themselves. They came close in the 51st minute when Antony Gordon’s cross fell to Nick Woltemade six yards out, only for Forest defender Morato to make a vital block.
However, the breakthrough arrived seven minutes later. Bruno Guimarães went in strongly on Morgan Gibbs-White, earning the ball in a robust challenge that Forest felt was a foul. Dan Burn picked out Guimarães on the edge of the box, and the midfielder curled a superb right-footed shot past Matz Sels to give the Magpies the lead.
Forest tried to respond, but it were the hosts who had the best chances with goalkeeper Sels producing smart stops to deny Sandro Tonali, Malick Thiaw, and Harvey Barnes.
Despite bringing on Callum Hudson-Odoi, Igor Jesus, and Omari Hutchinson in a bid to spark a comeback, the visitors were unable to create anything substantial.
The game was effectively sealed late on when Elliot Anderson’s poor decision in his own box led to a penalty. Woltemade stepped up and confidently converted, sending the ball into the top-left corner and making it 2-0.
The result provides Newcastle with back-to-back wins following their midweek European victory and leaves Forest languishing in 17th, with pressure mounting on Postecoglou.
