Newcastle will face Qarabag in a two-legged Champions League play-off for a place in the last 16.
The Magpies finished 12th in the league phase after drawing 1-1 with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and now face a long trip to Azerbaijan to take on a Qarabag side beaten 6-0 by Liverpool at Anfield in their final group match.
Elsewhere in the draw, Paris Saint-Germain, who finished 11th, were paired with Ligue 1 rivals Monaco, while 15-time European champions Real Madrid will meet Benfica in a high-profile rematch.
Madrid return immediately to Lisbon after suffering a 4-2 defeat there earlier this week, a result that saw Benfica secure a top-24 finish thanks to a dramatic late goal from goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Other notable ties include Bodo/Glimt’s reward for back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid with a clash against Inter Milan, while Juventus will face Galatasaray.
The play-off first legs will be played on 17 and 18 February, with the return fixtures scheduled for 24 and 25 February.
