Newcastle United put in a ruthless performance on Merseyside as they earned their first Premier League away win of the season.

The Toffees had shown plenty of defensive rigidity with 10 men at Old Trafford but there was none of that here in front of their own fans.

The visitors took the lead inside the first minute when Lewis Miley sent in a corner from the left that Malick Thiaw headed in from close range for his first goal as a Newcastle player.

From that point on Everton dominated the ball and looked like the better team until suddenly it was 2-0 to the visitors. Jordan Pickford will surely have felt like he could do better as Miley put in a shot from the edge of the area that, despite going through a busy crowd of bodies, should have been stopped by the England goalkeeper.

It was 3-0 by half-time and this was a really lovely finish by Nick Woltemade after he received the ball from Anthony Elanga. The ball bounced in front of the German who was then able to casually lob the ball over Pickford to give his side a commanding lead at the break.

Everton almost equalised early into the second period when Aaron Ramsdale punched a corner clear but only as far as substitute Carlos Alcaraz who hammered an effort off the bar.

The game was put to bed by Thiaw in the 58th minute with the defender getting his second of the night. Everton failed to deal with a corner that eventually came out to Lewis Hall. The full-back sent in a super cross that deceived Pickford and found Thiaw at the far post to make it 4-0.

David Moyes' side did pull one back with a really wonderful effort from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who brought the ball down Dennis Bergkamp-style before slotting past Pope in the corner.

Everton weren't able to reduce the deficit any further though with Newcastle earning a 4-1 win that sees them go up to 11th in the table.
