Newcastle United are the club ‘most active in pursuit’ of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swedish striker is a transfer target for several of Europe’s elite clubs after an explosive period at Sporting Lisbon. Gyokeres has scored 76 goals in 81 appearance for the Portuguese champions and was the Primeira Liga’s leading scorer last season.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the 26-year-old as the Gunners search for a striker. Manchester United are also monitoring his situation, following the appointment of ex-Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
However, Football Transfers claim Newcastle are the most active team in pursuit of the player. The Magpies are aware of strong interest in Alexander Isak and consider the forward’s Sweden teammate as the ideal replacement – should Isak depart.
Gyokeres has a release clause of €100m (£84.4m) in his contract at the Estádio José Alvalade, though Sporting are reportedly prepared to let him leave for around €60m (£50.6m) to €70m (£59.1m) in the summer.
Newcastle’s pursuit could hinge on whether the Magpies secure Champions League qualification. Eddie Howe’s side are sixth in the Premier League table, two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.
Newcastle’s need for a centre-forward is likely to step up in the coming months, as interest in Isak increases and Callum Wilson approaches the end of his contract at St James’ Park. The latter has played just 58 minutes in the Premier League this season due to another injury-plagued campaign. Wilson will turn 33 next month and it appears unlikely his deal will be extended in the North East.
