Newcastle Strike Late to Deepen Spurs Anxiety

Pressure Mounts in North London

There are nights when the mood inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium shifts from restless to ominous, when every misplaced pass feels heavier than the last. This was one of them. Newcastle travelled south under scrutiny, their own form stuttering, yet left with a 2-1 victory that sharpened the focus on Spurs and their embattled head coach Thomas Frank.

Both managers arrived under pressure. Frank admitted his injury-hit squad were “desperate” for their first league win of 2026. Eddie Howe, after one win in eight across all competitions, urged his players to show “our feeling of how important this is to us”. Only one side translated those words into conviction.

Unlikely Sources Shape Contest

Newcastle’s breakthrough came from an unexpected contributor. Without a recognised striker, they leaned on set piece persistence. In first half stoppage time, Anthony Elanga’s cross found Malick Thiaw. Guglielmo Vicario parried the initial header, but Thiaw reacted quickest, stabbing home ahead of Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray.

The travelling support erupted. Spurs, already tense, were forced to chase the game again.

To their credit, they responded after the interval. Their first corner produced an equaliser, Xavi Simons delivered, Sarr headed back across goal, Gray hooked in. Frank punched the air, the stadium surged with relief. Yet the momentum proved fleeting.

Ramsey Delivers Howe Relief

Newcastle’s winner carried both craft and symbolism. Anthony Gordon weaved into the penalty area, drawing defenders before slipping the ball to Jacob Ramsey. The midfielder, signed from Aston Villa in the summer, finished first time into the bottom corner for his maiden Newcastle goal.

It restored the lead and, effectively, control.

Howe’s selection calls had raised eyebrows. Big money forwards Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa were left out. Ramsey returned in place of Sandro Tonali. Elanga started. On this evidence, the gamble paid off.

Newcastle, often fragile when protecting leads, held firm. They have dropped 19 points from winning positions this season, more than any Premier League side, but here they showed resilience that has too often been absent.

Fan Frustration Grows Louder

If Newcastle left buoyed, Spurs were left exposed. They have now gone eight Premier League games without victory, their worst run since 2008. The table paints an alarming picture, Tottenham sitting 16th, edging toward a relegation conversation few anticipated.

Supporter reaction told its own story. Chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” rang out, boos greeted the final whistle, and many seats emptied before stoppage time concluded.
