Newcastle United have released a damning 37-word statement to confirm Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool in a Premier League record £125m deal.

The Sweden international has joined the champions on a six-year deal at Anfield and will wear the No 9 shirt after an acrimonious summer that saw the 25-year-old force a transfer after claims of “broken promises” and that “trust is lost” between the parties.

Newcastle’s acknowledgment of the split was delivered in blunt style and did not acknowledge the players’ contribution to the club’s Carabao Cup success, a first domestic trophy in 70 years, and 62 goals in all competitions.

“Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee,” read a club statement.

“The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had wanted to bring in two strikers and succeeded in the final day of the transfer window, breaking the club record by signing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for an initial £69m and then Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £50m.

Isak said: “It has been a long journey to get here but I am super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and really looking forward to. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans and getting back out there. I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything.”
