Newcastle United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga after activating the Czech Republic international’s £25.7 million release clause.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Magpies after travelling to the club’s training camp in Spain to finalise the move. Newcastle had been searching for an experienced first-choice goalkeeper this summer despite already signing 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Reims.

Hornicek arrives following an impressive campaign with Braga, where he kept seven clean sheets during the club’s run to the Europa League semi-finals — the highest tally of any goalkeeper in the competition last season.

Speaking after completing the transfer, Hornicek described the move as a dream opportunity. “The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move and now I’m so happy to be here,” he said.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity in a new league, which I’m very excited about. From the very first moment I arrived here, I received a fantastic welcome and really felt the warmth of the club.

“I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St James’ Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can’t wait to play in front of them.”

Hornicek also impressed with his distribution in Portugal last season. According to Opta, he ranked second among Primeira Liga goalkeepers for successful passes (846) and fourth for passing accuracy (75 per cent), attributes that are expected to suit Newcastle’s style of play.

Sporting director Ross Wilson believes the club have secured one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers.

“Lukas’ progress in recent years has been remarkable,” Wilson said.

“He has firmly established himself as one of Europe’s top young goalkeepers.

“We knew there would be no shortage of clubs interested in acquiring Lukas this summer, but it quickly became evident how keen he was to be a part of what we are building here.”

Hornicek becomes Newcastle’s latest addition as the club continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
