Newcastle United have “stepped up their interest” in Hugo Ekitike as they prepare to break their club record transfer fee for the striker.

The Eintracht Frankfurt star is one of the hottest commodities on the market this summer after enjoying a career-best campaign.

Ekitike scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga to help the German outfit qualify for the UEFA Champions League for just the second time in their history. He also registered 11 goal involvements in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal.

Several Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the France U21 international, but Newcastle appear to be leading the charge for his signature, which they tried and failing to get in January 2022.

According to The Athletic, “talks are ongoing” between the Magpies and Frankfurt on a deal worth around £65 million. That would break their current transfer record, which they set in 2022 when they spent £63m to buy Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.

Sky Sports News claim that Newcastle have “held meetings” in Germany over a potential deal. “Further meetings” have taken place with the player’s representatives in Austria, where the club are based for a pre-season training camp. It is also claimed that Frankfurt value Ekitike at a whopping £86m.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Newcastle have submitted a bid worth more than the £60m offered by another club in the summer transfer window, while Julien Laurens claims Ekitike’s agent is in Newcastle to “finalise” a deal worth around £70m.

Manchester United put Ekitike on their list of targets this summer, while Liverpool have also shown an interest. Chelsea were said to be interested in a move, but they have already bought two forwards in Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
