Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade has delayed his call-up to the Germany national team after being struck down by illness. The Geordies will hope it is nothing serious.

Woltemade continued his fine run of form by scoring as Newcastle picked up a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Sunday.

However, Woltemade’s absence comes as a blow for both Newcastle and Germany.

Lauded for his ‘great technical ability’ upon joining Newcastle, he has become one of Eddie Howe’s most reliable attacking outlets.

Woltemade has netted three goals in eight days, including a Champions League strike in the 4-0 thrashing of Union Saint-Gilloise.

He also scored a composed late penalty against Forest that sealed the win for the Magpies.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has opted not to call up a replacement as he monitors the situation closely ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

The DFB reportedly remains hopeful that Woltemade will recover in time to join the squad later this week.

The former Stuttgart ace, who impressed during the summer’s Under-21 European Championship, started both of Germany’s matches during last month’s international break.

He is viewed as a rising talent capable of cementing a place in the senior set-up ahead of next year’s World Cup.

For Newcastle, the timing is bittersweet. His early-season form has helped reignite momentum in attack after a slow start to the campaign.

But Woltemade has been dealing with fitness issues, and Howe’s medical staff will be hoping Germany give him some reprieve.

The medical team will now be eager to ensure the forward returns to Tyneside fully fit after the break.
