We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle United 4 Manchester United 1.

This was an outstanding performance, regardless of how poor Manchester United have become of late.

We bulldozed them aside and surged into the top four.

Everyone outside of Newcastle has been expecting a post-cup win comedown, but there is no sign of it yet.

The first half, if not exactly even, was quite balanced. We had the bulk of the play, but we failed to convert all but one of our various chances. Man U hit us on the break (good goal, to fair), and at half time, I was wondering if this was going to be ‘one of those games’.

But not to worry – we came out for the second half and blew our opponents away. I thought it was unsporting of manure to leave out Onana, but luckily, their replacement keeper is just as bad. He gifted us our fourth, but he wasn’t the only red to make life easy for us. Faced with the speed and power of Newcastle United, they looked terrified, made mistake after mistake, and – basically – bottled it.

I’m not sure if this is controversial, or whether it’s the alcohol talking, but I thought all of our players were better than all of theirs, and some of theirs cost a fortune.

Once we’d scored our fourth, we made five substitutions, and took our foot off the gas with an eye on what is to come, and still looked far superior to our opponents. Palace and Villa will not be easy games (definitely not as easy as this) so we’ll need to keep this momentum going, and maybe look at changing the starting line-up. Four points from those two games and we’ll be set fair for Europe.

This game made me feel great – hopefully it did the same for Eddie.

Nick Pope – 8

Garnacho did well for their goal by taking the shot on with his wrong foot, so I wouldn’t level criticism at our keeper.

Otherwise, solid, and a couple of good saves in the first half.

Kieran Trippier – 8

I’m so pleased Eddie didn’t allow Tripps to leave when he – allegedly – wanted to, and when, to be fair, he wasn’t playing very well.

He’s been great since he came back. He was aggressive today and comfortable on the ball.

He was a big part of our cup win and if we qualify for the Champions League, he’ll be a big reason why.

Fabian Schar – 8

Our defence didn’t have a lot to do today but Fab played well.

Won the ball, played a few good passes, and didn’t put a foot wrong. Probably didn’t have to break sweat to do it.

Dan Burn – 9

I thought BDB had a great game.

His confidence seems to have skyrocketed since his cup heroics and England call-up.

He was first to everything, galloped up the pitch when the mood took him, seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself.

Tino Livramento – 9

Tino has been great at right back but an absolute revelation at left back.

He and Barnes have struck up a great partnership in attack down the left hand side. This probably explains why he was out of position for manure’s goal, but that aside, he was magnificent.

Bruno Guimaraes – 9

Got better as the game went on.

Threw himself into tackles, used the ball well, and rounded things off with a smartly-taken goal.

Sandro Tonali – 10

I have been watching football for over 60 years and Sandro is one of the best players I have seen in my time.

Sometimes I watch him for 20 seconds or so. He is ALWAYS looking around, getting a 360-degree picture of where everyone is on the pitch. It’s no accident that he’s always in the right place at the right time.

On top of that, of course, he’s great on the ball, and aggressive without being dirty. And he has a mighty engine.

He was still pressing like a man possessed when the ref was thinking about blowing for full time. Oh – and he scored an excellent goal with a volley on the run. That ain’t easy.

Joelinton – 8

Joe didn’t need to be his usual aggressive self today. No one in red wanted to take him on!

So he cruised rather than battled through this match. I’m happy if he conserved some energy – Palace and Villa will give him a proper workout.

Jacob Murphy – 8

Another good game from Murph.

Whipped a respectable number of balls into the box and did his usual diligent job in defence.

His assist for Barnes’ first goal was very smart.

Alexander Isak – 9

I thought this was his best all-round game for a while.

One of his many attributes is that when he’s tightly marked – as he was today – you can ping the ball straight to his feet at pace. Chances are, he’ll do something clever with it. And that is how Tonali got our first when Isak lobbed a beautiful ball into his path.

He’ll be disappointed to see a 4-1 scoreline without his name featuring, but he led the line well and had some lovely touches.

Harvey Barnes – 10

An excellent display and an instant recall for Anthony Gordon is no longer a foregone conclusion.

Two nice goals (the second one was a cracking finish) and a Player-of-the-Match performance.

Another player who is enjoying his football. I hope he continues to do so.

SUBS

Emil Krafth – 7

The pick of our subs.

Looks like a choirboy. Plays like a devil.

Came off the bench and slotted straight in.

Tough in defence, enterprising in attack.

Will have a part to play in the run-in.

Callum Wilson – 6

Came on and did a job and that job was to maintain control and conserve energy.

Didn’t make a big impression but didn’t need to.

Anthony Gordon – 6

See Callum Wilson.

Sean Longstaff – 6

See Callum Wilson.

Lewis Miley – 6

See Callum Wilson.
