Recent breaking news suggests that Newcastle United have identified Barcelona’s 17-year-old sensation, Guille Fernandez, as a primary transfer target. Spanish outlet Sport reports that the Magpies have contacted the Catalan giants several times. They have done so to show they are serious about a deal.

Football Espana has translated these updates. They note that the midfielder feels increasingly stuck at the Nou Camp. The famous La Masia academy rates Fernandez highly. However, he has struggled to get any first-team minutes under manager Hansi Flick this season. This lack of game time has reportedly made the 17-year-old want to leave.

The teenager currently plays for Barça Atlètic and the Under-19 side, yet he believes he is ready for senior football. The report reveals Newcastle United are pushing hardest for him. They have already started early talks to see if a deal is possible.

Barcelona, however, are standing their ground. The club hierarchy thinks Fernandez will be a star and has blocked initial bids. Even with this pushback, the player’s frustration gives Newcastle a real chance. Eddie Howe’s recruitment team seems ready to pounce on this situation. They hope to tempt the youngster to St James’ Park by offering a quicker path to Premier League football.

Newcastle United currently sit tenth in the Premier League table. They are dealing with a season plagued by up-and-down results. Recent losses to Aston Villa and West Ham United show the team need more creativity in midfield.

Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali often have to do everything themselves in that area. The squad definitely has talent. Yet, the recent slump suggests the group needs a spark from someone new. Guille Fernandez looks like a great fit. He is an energetic, box-to-box player who has that technical Barça style but is also very strong for his age.

Signing a 17-year-old might look like a risk for a team fighting for Europe. However, Eddie Howe has shown that he isn’t afraid to play young players. The way Lewis Miley has developed proves this clearly. Fernandez probably wouldn’t start over the big names right away.

Even so, signing him would be a smart long-term move. The club want to secure top-tier talent before their price tag explodes. Frankly, this move makes a lot of sense. Newcastle United need to prove to him that he’ll actually play on Tyneside. If they do, they could secure a midfielder who can run their games for the next 10 years. The big hurdle is still convincing Barcelona to sell a player they really want to keep.
