Manchester City are once again expected to face a stern test when it comes to efforts to sign Tino Livramento from Newcastle United, according to new reports.
The Magpies are keen to tie the 23-year-old down to a new contract and make him one of the highest-paid players in Eddie Howe’s star-studded squad, despite suffering multiple injury setbacks so far this season.
Having twice recovered from a knee injury, Livramento hobbled off against Bournemouth with a hamstring problem in a breathtaking FA Cup tie last month, which ended 7-6 in favour of the Magpies on penalties.
The defender is one of three long-term absentees for Howe at present, in a squad that has been weakened considerably after Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar – who underwent ankle surgery recently – were both ruled out until April.
Livramento is expected back in a matter of weeks, while his contract in the north-east is set to run until 2028 and discussions have been held over fresh terms as links with Manchester City continue to intensify, as reported by Football Insider.
Eddie Howe will certainly not want Tino Livramento to leave his squad any time soon given Kieran Trippier’s contract expires in the summer and at 35 years of age, it is unlikely he will continue in the Premier League or at the highest level for much longer.
Returning with plenty of time to spare, Livramento will want to better his credentials ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup while fighting for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad alongside Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Livramento featured 45 times for Newcastle last season and played a major role in achieving a fifth-place finish in the Premier League. He also started in the final of the Carabao Cup in March last year, where the Magpies secured their first domestic trophy for 70 years.
And by achieving such a feat – and a first major trophy since 1969 – Livramento’s transfer value increased drastically. It is no surprise that Newcastle do not want to offload the defender, but if they are it would take a huge fee, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, he said, “Newcastle don’t want to lose him, there’s no doubt about that, they want to keep hold of Livramento.
“There have been ongoing talks over a new deal, but nothing is agreed as yet, so that would maybe give Man City a bit of hope that they maybe could be lured away.
“It would take a huge offer I think for Newcastle to even consider selling him. He’s under contract until 2028, so they’re in no rush to sell. Eddie Howe wants to keep hold of Livramento and build his team around him, because he is such an exciting player and someone with huge potential.”
Manchester City have been monitoring the defender closely and after the signings of Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, sporting director Hugo Viana – who took on the role permanently last summer – has not shown signs of stopping anytime soon.
