Newcastle United have intensified their interest in FC Porto attacker William Gomes, according to Diario AS journalist Eduardo Burgos.
Newcastle are expected to bring reinforcements to the St James Park club in the summer regardless of the future of Magpies manager Eddie Howe, and Gomes has emerged as a target.
The 20-year-old Brazilian winger has plenty of suitors in the English top-flight and La Liga, and Porto want at least €50 million for his services.
Newcastle are not the only ones keen on Gomes but his future will only be decided after the World Cup in July.
The Magpies target has been in fine form this term, with 13 goals and two assists to his name in 40 appearances.
He could be a decent addition to the Newcastle attack but a potential lack of European football at SJP could see him choose other suitors ahead of him.
The Toons are currently 14th in the Premier League table after 32 games and will need to improve significantly in their remaining six fixtures to secure a continental slot for next season.
There are ten points between them and fifth-place Liverpool, but not many Newcastle fans will fancy their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
They have been underwhelming in the final third for most of the season, with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa not doing enough, and a move for Gomes appears to be appealing to them.
However, the Magpies may need to win most of their remaining six league games to have a chance of landing the Brazilian forward and other top targets.
They take on Bournemouth, Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Fulham in their remaining fixtures and could clinch a place in the top-seven if they pick up about 12 points.
