Bruno Guimaraes has addressed speculation linking him with a move to Manchester City, reaffirming his commitment to Newcastle United amidst the Premier League champions’ reported interest.
Speaking to Globo Esporte about Pep Guardiola’s admiration, the Brazilian midfielder expressed gratitude while underlining his satisfaction at St James’ Park.
“At my club, I am an idol, and I have a lot of respect,” Guimaraes said. “I am the captain of Newcastle, and it is something that, if you had asked me three years ago, my biggest dream would have been to play in the Premier League.
“Playing, being an idol, being captain is something wonderful. I really like Newcastle. Of course, having Manchester City’s suggestions shows that I am at a high level, but it was nothing more than suggestions.”
Guimaraes also revealed that he had spoken with Guardiola but emphasised the exchange was cordial rather than transfer-related.
“We have spoken once after the interview. I praised his work, he praised my work, but it was nothing more than that,” he added.
City’s interest in Guimaraes is long-standing, with the midfielder frequently linked to City during the summer.
Newcastle avoided any bids by ensuring no club activated the Brazilian’s £100 million release clause, which expired in June.
Guimaraes has since cemented his role in Eddie Howe’s plans, even captaining the team since their pre-season tour of Japan and leading by example on the pitch.
While City are expected to pursue midfield reinforcements in January following Rodri’s injury, any move for Guimaraes would likely face resistance from Newcastle, who view him as indispensable.
Guardiola has other targets, including Dani Olmo, but his admiration for the Newcastle midfielder remains evident.
The Brazilian midfielder’s focus is firmly on Newcastle. His performances this season, combined with his leadership qualities, have solidified his status as a pivotal figure at the club.
While flattered by City’s interest, the 27-year-old remains committed to the Magpies’ ambitions, reinforcing his bond with the team and fans alike.
