Newcastle United move ahead of Manchester United in Benjamin Sesko pursuit | OneFootball

Newcastle United have stolen a march on Manchester United in the pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, according to Slovenian outlet Delo.

The 22-year-old forward, who has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs over the last few months, is poised to join the Magpies as they intensify their efforts to sign him.

Arsenal were the favourites to sign Sesko earlier this summer. Despite their failed attempt, he is still expected to leave the Red Bull Arena and has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place to facilitate that.

Newcastle and Man United have been in discussions with the player’s camp regarding personal terms before approaching Leipzig with an offer.

While Man United seemed to be front-runners initially despite their lack of European football, Newcastle have moved ahead after significantly increasing its offer.

Sesko has reportedly given Newcastle the green light to commence negotiations with Leipzig, who are holding out for a guaranteed €75 million fee.

If Sesko completes a move to St James’ Park, this would have ramifications for the future of Alexander Isak.

Newcastle rejected a formal bid from Liverpool for Isak on Friday and are not expected to part ways with the player until a replacement is brought in.

They have suffered disappointment on multiple fronts during the summer transfer window, but Sesko’s arrival would be a welcome development.

Newcastle are also close to tying Tino Livramento down to a new contract, fending off interest from Manchester City.
