Newcastle United are trying to sign Kees Smit.

The teenage midfielder described as a ‘wonderkid’ and the AZ Alkmaar young star looking capable of becoming a top player.

The 6ft tall midfielder turns 20 in January and is much sought after.

Playing through all the various youth levels for the Netherlands, they won the Under 19s European Championships last year and Kees Smit picked up the most valuable player award and finished joint top goalscorer.

The Mail now report that their information is that Newcastle United are looking to be proactive and try to sign Kees Smit, ahead of a host of other top clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman talked about Kees Smit this week and compared him to Barcelona star Pedri:

“He has the awareness to receive in tight spaces and move the ball forward.

“That is something we value.

“The resemblance people see (with Pedri) is in how he positions himself and his decision-making under pressure.

“Big clubs follow players with these characteristics. That is normal.

“What is important is that he continues developing where he is, playing regularly.”

The 19 year old has already played more than 50 times for AZ Alkmaar and has also drawn comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne.
