Manchester City will travel to Tyneside on Saturday evening to face Newcastle United upon the return of Premier League duties after the recent international break.
It will be the Blues’ first game after the international break, just under a fortnight after City’s 3-0 win over rivals Liverpool. A stellar Jeremy Doku performance helped City along the way in that one.
Goals from Doku, Erling Haaland and Nico Gonzalez allowed the Blues to move within four points of league leaders Arsenal, following the Gunners’ 2-2 draw at Sunderland the night before. Doku continued his brilliant form this season in the recent international break, scoring two goals and grabbing an assist in Belgium’s 7-0 win over Liechenstein.
Meanwhile, Haaland added four more goals to his season tally in Norway’s two 4-1 wins over the break, capping off an incredible qualifying campaign that saw them qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.
The 25-year-old forward has 32 goals for club and country so far this season – and we’ve not even reached December. Newcastle, on the other hand, haven’t really hit the ground running just yet, sitting in 14th place in the Premier League table with just 12 points from 11 games.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday evening’s clash in the Toon!
Manchester City will face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday November 22nd, with kick off scheduled for 17:30 GMT.
Samuel Barrott has been confirmed to take charge as match referee for the encounter between Newcastle and Man City.
Tim Wood and Nick Greenhalgh are the assistant referees for the tie, with Leigh Doughty set to be the fourth official. Craig Pawson and Nick Hopton will be the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and Assistant VAR respectively.
Manchester City will be delighted that there are no fresh injury concerns. Rodri and Mateo Kovacic remain sidelined. Guardiola has said that Rodri is making ‘good steps’ towards his return to action. Kovacic, on the other hand, is expected to be sidelined until February.
As for Newcastle, Lewis Hall is expected to start his second league game this season after returning from injury. Dan Burn will be suspended after being sent off in Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford in their last match.
Valentino Livramento could potentially return to the matchday squad, after struggling with a knee injury since the end of September.
Eddie Howe has said that it will be ‘touch and go’ in terms of whether Anthony Gordon will be fit to play after he was forced to withdraw from the England squad with a hip injury.
Midfielders Sandro Tonali and Joelinton are also expected to be in the matchday squad after picking up minor knocks whilst away with Italy and Brazil respectively.
City were 4-0 winners in the last meeting between the two sides, with Omar Marmoush netting his first hat-trick for the club last term. The last meeting between the two sides at St. James’ Park resulted in a 1-1 draw, with Josko Gvardiol getting on the scoresheet for the Blues on that occasion.
Guardiola’s side are unbeaten in their last 12 league meetings against the Magpies and will be looking to extend that run on Saturday. City’s last league loss against Newcastle was a 2-1 defeat in January 2019; they went on to win their remaining 14 matches of the season to clinch the title by a point ahead of Liverpool.
Erling Haaland is one goal away from reaching 100 league goals and if he were to score against the Magpies, he would smash their club legend Alan Shearer’s record of the quickest player in Premier League history to reach a century of goals.
City have won 12 games away from home against Newcastle in the Premier League, their joint-most away victories against an opponent in the competition.
The Blues have scored in each of their last 33 Premier League matches against Newcastle.
Eddie Howe has won none of his 18 Premier League meetings with City (D2 L16) – it’s the most a manager has faced an opponent in the competition without ever winning.
In the United Kingdom, Newcastle United vs Manchester City will be broadcast live on Sky Sports main event for a 17:30 GMT kick-off, with coverage starting from 17:00 GMT. There will also be live radio commentary on BBC Radio Newcastle for those unable to watch the match.
