Newcastle United host PSV Eindhoven in their second-to-last UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture at St. James’ Park on Wednesday evening.

The Magpies were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayern Leverkusen on the last matchday , leaving them winless in their last two matches in the competition.

PSV, meanwhile, could not build on their impressive 4-1 win at Liverpool, suffering a 3-2 home loss to Atletico Madrid.

Match preview

Newcastle have struggled for consistency domestically this term. Their goalless Premier League draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers is further proof of that.

However, the Tynesiders have fared better in Europe, gathering 10 points from six games, sitting two points outside the automatic qualification spots for the round of 16.

Newcastle boast a strong home form, losing just three on their patch this term. Manager Eddie Howe will be hoping they can use that strength to their advantage in this encounter.

PSV have garnered eight points, occupying one of the play-off spots, but must avoid defeat here to maintain that position.

Since losing to Atleti, the Dutch side have gone on a six-game winning run and will head into Wednesday’s meeting with Newcastle in confident mood.

The Eredivisie leaders are a very rapid side, with forward Ricardo Pepi leading the tournament for top speed.

Head-to-head

Both sides have met twice in the Champions League, with PSV claiming the victory on both occasions.

Team news

Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy, William Osula, Dan Burn, Emil Krafth, Valentino Livramento, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles will sit this clash out.

PSV also have several players sidelined through injury including Alassane Plea, Nick Olij, Myron Boadu, Ricardo Pepi, and Ruben van Bommel.

It remains to be seen whether the Morocco pair of Ismael Saibari and Anass Salah-Eddine will be involved following their AFCON commitments.

Predicted line-ups

Newcastle (4-3-3): Nick Pope, Lewis Miley, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Antony Gordon, Yoanne Wissa, Harvey Barnes.

PSV (4-2-3-1): Matej Kovar, Mauro Junior, Yarek Gasiorowski, Jerdy Schouten, Kiliann Sildillia, Paul Wanner, Joey Veerman, Couhaib Driouech, Guus Til, Ivan Perisic, Esmir Bajraktarevic.

Prediction

We expect Newcastle to triumph 2-1.
