Speaking to Bild am Sonntag (via @iMiaSanMia), Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade has responded to comments about him in the summer.

Following his move to Newcastle from Stuttgart for €75m, Bayern Munich’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge called the Premier League side ‘idiots’ due to the fee that they paid for the 23-year-old on deadline day.

In his response to the comment, Woltemade said:

“My teammates commented on it, I didn’t. I think that was the right thing to do. A lot was made of my name, Bayern, and transfer fee during the summer; that was the story of the summer. To answer your question: the headlines everywhere said “idiots.” – But I read Mr. Rummenigge’s entire statement – it was certainly somewhat unfortunate, but not quite so dramatic.”

Woltemade on his deadline day to Newcastle:

The striker broke Stuttgart’s record sale when he moved to England on deadline day. Several questions about the fee that the Saudi-owned club paid were raised, and Woltemade was very much aware of the situation:

“The transfer fee was a very prominent topic; I couldn’t avoid it. I was frequently confronted with it. But I didn’t choose this situation; I’m the least responsible for the sums involved. Nevertheless, I was happy that Newcastle saw enough potential in me to pay that amount. It makes no difference whether I go from Werder Bremen to Stuttgart on a free transfer or from VfB Stuttgart to Newcastle for €75 million. Even though I know that the transfer fee means a few more pairs of eyes are on me. However, the issue of transfer fees is viewed much more relaxed in England than in Germany. Within the team, the issue of transfer fees doesn’t play a role anyway.”

In the opening stages of his career at St.James’ Park, Woltemade had hit the ground running, but in recent games, his form has plateaued. In 14 games, the former Stuttgart striker has six goals in all competitions.

However, the 23-year-old is happy about his start to life in the North East of England:

“The whole Newcastle package had potential for tension, especially since I arrived on the last day. Then there was the transfer fee. And the expectations placed on me, because Newcastle’s top striker, Alexander Isak, had left. The start to the season wasn’t ideal. There was definitely pressure – I was very glad that it subsided.”
