Tonali and Gigio Donnarumma made one appearance each in Italy’s last two games against Moldova and Norway.

The midfielder started the first game in Moldova, but was not called up for the Norway match as he was on a yellow card and would have missed the World Cup playoff semifinal if he were to be booked.

Donnarumma, on the other hand, started between the sticks in a 4-1 loss against Norway at San Siro, which he labelled as “unacceptable.”

“It’s a painful defeat, but we’ve got to lift our heads up, because it is all at stake in March with those two games,” said the Italian goalkeeper.

“We must rediscover our confidence and self-belief, and I am sure thanks also to our coach that we will do it.

“We certainly need to improve in that, listen to the coach, keep working, and when we concede a goal, we’ve got to keep our heads in the game. Against a team like Norway, you can have 5-10 minutes under pressure, but we’ve got to do it together as a team and get through it.”
