Liverpool on the hunt for their next manager after announcing on Friday that Arne Slot has been sacked as head coach.
The Dutchman is gone just one year after leading the Reds to Premier League glory and the 20th top-flight title in the club’s history.
Liverpool say that “change is necessary” following a disappointing defence of their crown which saw them finish fifth in the table and without a trophy.
According to one major bookmaker, Andoni Iraola is the unbackable favourite to replace Slot in the hot seat after leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season.
The Basque native has been courted by both Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen following a hugely impressive spell with the Cherries, guiding the club to their highest-ever league finish and Europe for the first time in their history.
The distant second-favourite to take the reins is Sebastian Hoeness, who is currently managing Stuttgart. The German coach led the Bundesliga club to second place in his first season, won the DFB Pokal in his second, and reached the final again this year.
Pierre Sage is just behind Hoeness with odds of 10/1 after leading RC Lens to glory in the Coupe de France, as well as a second-placed finish behind Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Luis Enrique also features highly in the odds, but he is unlikely to swap Paris for Anfield. Oliver Glasner is a more likely candidate after leaving Crystal Palace, having guided the London club to three trophies in the last two seasons.
Steven Gerrard has been given odds of 14/1 to get the job, although it feels like that should be much longer after his failure at Aston Villa.
Don’t count on Jurgen Klopp making a fairytale return to Liverpool either; he is 20/1 to replace Slot, with his odds lengthening by the minute.
Iraola’s appointment would make complete sense as he is arguably the best free agent available at this moment after Xabi Alonso signed for Chelsea earlier this month. Other top-class coaches may become available after the FIFA World Club, but that robs the club of valuable time to plan ahead of next season.
Andoni Iraola – 1/20
Sebastian Hoeness – 5/1
Pierre Sage – 10/1
Oliver Glasner – 10/1
Luis Enrique – 12/1
Steven Gerrard – 14/1
Unai Emery – 16/1
Jurgen Klopp – 20/1
