Neymar, Rayan and other players sent messages of support to Philippe Coutinho after he asked to leave Vasco citing mental health. Globo.com reports that the responses came after his social media announcement.
Family members, Vasco team-mates and public figures also reacted. Current defenders Robert Renan and Lucas Freitas were the first from the squad to reply. Former players Lucas Leiva, Dedé and Souza added their messages.
Coutinho described himself as very mentally tired and did not return for the second half against Volta Redonda to prioritise his mental health. His message stressed love and respect for the club and its fans, and a belief that he had always given his best. It also reflected how difficult he finds being judged for something he considers outside his character.
The 33-year-old has informed Vasco of his intention to terminate his contract, with his representatives notifying president Pedrinho. The hierarchy were caught by surprise. He also phoned Fernando Diniz to outline his decision, and the head coach tried to change his mind without success.
Vasco had already opened talks to renew the number 10’s deal, which runs until June this year. Discussions were under way to extend the agreement at least until the end of the year.
