Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly (20) has received his first senior England call-up, stepping in to replace the injured Reece James, who was ruled out after picking up an injury following Chelsea’s 2–1 win over Liverpool on Saturday.
As reported by Sky Sports, James sustained the injury late in the game, and subsequent medical assessments confirmed he would miss England’s upcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia. The right-back’s absence is another setback for Thomas Tuchel’s squad, which has already been forced to adjust to several defensive injuries this season.
O’Reilly, 20, had initially been named in the England Under-21 squad, but his rapid elevation to the senior side caps a remarkable rise for the Manchester City academy graduate. Having made nine appearances across all competitions so far this campaign, O’Reilly has impressed, earning one assist and widespread praise from Pep Guardiola.
For England, his inclusion offers both a short-term solution and a glimpse of the future. With James sidelined and competition fierce at full-back, O’Reilly’s versatility could prove invaluable as Tuchel looks to maintain England’s strong start to their international calendar.
