Nicolas Jover warned Arsenal’s key set piece threat has been “found out”

Arsenal’s ability to find the back of the net from corners has made rivals dread conceding to them whenever they face the Gunners.

With three goals from corners already this season, it is easy to believe the trend is continuing and that opponents can do little to stop it.

But is that really the case?

Gabriel “found out”

Troy Deeney, analysing Arsenal’s defeat to Liverpool, has suggested that despite their early success, the Gunners’ most potent set piece weapon may have been figured out.

Deeney argues that Gabriel Magalhães, often the target of Arsenal’s well delivered corners, may now struggle to attack them as effectively.

Deeney told the Sports Agent podcast: “But if you keep relying on set pieces, teams will just do what Liverpool did, which was put the small man on Gabriel.

“Soon as he breaks through that, he runs straight into Szoboszlai. And now we go and let the big boys go ahead.

“So after a year, maybe 18 months of being able to be that surprise package because they’ve got great delivery and they’ve got people that want to head it.

“Now, the same way it used to be with Man City, everyone’s watched, studied and gone, right, this is how we stop them.”

While Liverpool did well to nullify Arsenal’s corner threat, they were helped by key absences.

Gabriel Magalhaes

Saka’s delivery missed, Rice off his best

Declan Rice struggled to deliver quality corners from the left, and with Bukayo Saka unavailable to swing them in, Arsenal’s set piece execution suffered as a result.

Even so, while Gabriel remains a significant aerial threat, it is worth noting that Arsenal have still scored from corners this season, even without him stepping up.

So, while opponents may focus on stopping the Brazilian, other Gunners, like Ricardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber, as they have already shown this season, are more than capable of stepping up and punishing teams from dead ball situations.

Thoughts Gooners?
