Nicolás Otamendi could face fallout at Benfica after an alleged racist post by his brother featuring Vinícius Júnior circulated online.

According to Planeta do Futebol, an image on X, formerly Twitter, allegedly posted by Gabriel Otamendi after Real Madrid v Benfica depicted Vinícius Júnior with monkey arms and legs. The 38-year-old’s brother has since deleted his account.

The controversy coincides with Vinícius accusing Gianluca Prestianni of calling him 'mono', a term meaning monkey, after the goal at the Estádio da Luz in a 1-0 defeat for Benfica.

UEFA is handling that case and has provisionally suspended Prestianni for Wednesday’s second leg of the play-off to reach the Champions League last 16.

Javier Tebas, the La Liga president, said racism must be eradicated and added that if the Benfica player is found guilty he should face severe punishment.

This season Otamendi, valued at one million euros, has played 41 competitive matches for Benfica, 22 in the league, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 3,645 minutes, he has scored three goals.
