Nike have begun their campaign this week to unveil Corinthians' new shirt, marking 50 years since the supporters' 'invasion' of the Maracanã. According to Globo.com, the push opens with a digital billboard in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro.
The brand says the launch aims to revive the spirit of 1976, when the club’s following spilled into the city, not just the stadium.
Corinthians estimate that approximately 70,000 supporters travelled from São Paulo to back the team against Fluminense at the Maracanã. Normal time ended 1-1, and extra time sent Timão through to the final.
Internacional ultimately won the title, but the mass procession became a landmark in Corinthians’ history. To commemorate it, the club and Nike have produced a collection featuring the crest used at the time.
At Parque São Jorge, the plan had been to debut the new kit next Wednesday against Fluminense at the Maracanã. The company did not meet the date, so the official launch has been moved to May.
