Ruhr Nachrichten reports that it is likely that Niklas Süle will leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer once his contract expires.
Despite Süle playing a role in Niko Kovac’s team, an extension of his deal beyond 2026 is currently out of the question at the Westfalenstadion. It was previously reported that a new deal on a reduced salary was a possibility.
The 30-year-old joined Dortmund in 2022 from Bayern Munich on a free transfer. At the time, he was given a hefty salary of €14m, and it was expected that he would become a leader of the Dortmund defence and could help them take the next step towards a title. However, that has not been the case.
Eight different injuries and illnesses, fitness issues, as well as off-pitch problems, have meant that Süle has never lived up to the hopes when he signed three years ago.
Considering Süle is one of, if not the highest paid player in the Dortmund squad, with a €14m salary. The money saved from the 30-year-old not renewing can then be used to meet the demands of Nico Schlotterbeck, who the club are currently in negotiations over an extension.
The 25-year-old joined the same summer as Süle, and the duo have gone on completely different paths, with Schlotterbeck becoming the leader and future face of the club, one of the roles Süle should have taken up when joining from Bayern.
