Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo remains sidelined with a muscle injury and will return from Ecuador’s camp to continue his rehabilitation. The 22-year-old was never in realistic contention for last weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United.

He had been a late omission against Brighton and Hove Albion on 14 March, after which head coach Regis Le Bris said the setback might keep him out for four to six weeks. According to Bolavip, his subsequent international call-up was a controversial surprise.

Despite that timeline, Angulo was named in Ecuador’s initial squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, which prompted confusion on Wearside and in South America. The report said the coach had made similar selections before.

By Thursday, clarity arrived when national boss Sebastián Beccacece told media Angulo would head back to Sunderland to recover. Along with midfielder Patrik Mercado of Independiente del Valle, he is expected to depart the camp on Saturday before flying to England.

Beccacece described the pair as significant losses and said the remainder of his squad are fit. The report also characterised Angulo, when available, as an undisputed starter and a key attacking option.
