Inter Milan can hardly point to the referees as an excuse this time after their disastrous 3-0 Serie A loss to Fiorentina.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They argue that referee Daniele Doveri handled the match well.

Inter suffered a huge setback in their season against Fiorentina yesterday.

Finally playing the match that had been temporarily abandoned at the start of December, the Nerazzurri took nothing and remain three points behind Napoli in the table with no game in hand.

And going by the performance they put in, Inter deserved no more than what they got.

Making matters worse is the fact that Inter had also dropped points against AC Milan in the derby on Sunday.

That was hardly a vintage Inter performance against the Rossoneri.

However, the Nerazzurri could point to at least one key refereeing decision as an excuse for their failure to take three points.

Replays showed what looked like a fairly obvious penalty on Inter striker Marcus Thuram.

And after the match, Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi fumed about the incident.

But there were no such excuses at the Stadio Artemio Franchi yesterday.

A first half goal from Carlos Augusto was disallowed for a very clear offside by the Brazilian.

And Fiorentina’s second goal came about from a perfectly good challenge by Amir Richardson to win the ball off of Hakan Calhanoglu in midfield.

Overall, the Gazzetta argue, referee Daniele Doveri did well. It was Inter Milan who screwed up this time.
