After the hard-fought last-minute 3-1 win against FC St. Pauli, FC Bayern now face their next test in the DFB Cup. Only two late goals in stoppage time secured the three points for FCB at the weekend, after they'd struggled for long periods to create something against a resolute St.Pauli defence. Bayern suffered a similar fate four weeks ago, when they only just managed to secure a point against a strong Union side in Berlin after 16 consecutive wins. "After the last game at Union, Vincent Kompany no longer needs to hold up a finger and warn us about what's to come. Everyone knows that now," said Max Eberl in the press conference ahead of the reunion with Union. At the beginning of November, a Harry Kane header in the 93rd minute had Bayern celebrating, but a 2-2 draw like the one at the Alte Försterei would now only be enough to take the game into extra time. This time, Bayern will have to invest more to ensure it's not their last appearance in the capital in this cup campaign.
Read the key statements from the press conference with Vincent Kompany and Max Eberl here:
"Of course I want to go back to Berlin after the game," said head coach Vincent Kompany, stressing: "You can always say you want to win everything - but I can't talk us into the final, it takes work and attitude. If we show how hungry we are for the final, we'll have a good chance." His team had shown against St. Pauli that they can deal with setbacks, which will have boosted their confidence for this knockout game. "We want to put in a good performance and win - we're prepared for anything, for 90 minutes or another 30."
The facts on the game against 1. FC Union Berlin:
In contrast, the Irons' dress rehearsal for the DFB Cup match did not go according to plan. Steffen Baumgart's side lost 2-1 against bottom club 1. FC Heidenheim, which ended their run of three consecutive games without defeat. The Berliners were leading at home until the 90th minute before a late double from the visitors in stoppage time left them empty-handed. It was a defeat that hurt the Berliners - and one they must now put behind them as quickly as possible: "We've just suffered a major body-blow and now have another highlight ahead of us," said Union head coach Steffen Baumgart.
We took a closer look at our upcoming opponents in our analysis:
The 53-year-old has come up against Bayern twice so far as coach of the capital city club - both times the game ended in a draw. However, another draw will definitely not happen in the DFB Cup, which is why Baumgart and his team are hoping for an upset: "There's only black and white in this game, no grey area - and neither team has anything to make up for. It's all about putting in the best possible performance to progress to the next round of the cup."
Alphonso Davies (back in team training following a cruciate ligament rupture) is not yet fit enough for the DFB Cup match, nor is Jamal Musiala (dislocation of the ankle and fracture of the fibula). Kompany confirmed that all players are otherwise fit.
Berlin are still without the injured Robert Skov, Dmytro Bogdanov and Andrik Markgraf.
