Noah Sadiki expressed pride after playing his part in DR Congo’s historic World Cup campaign.
The former Union Saint-Gilloise midfielder excelled in his first season on Wearside, becoming a favourite with the Stadium of Light faithful under Regis Le Bris. He made 35 appearances in all competitions as Sunderland finished seventh and reached the Europa League league phase alongside AC Milan, Juventus and Olympique Marseille.
His form earned a call-up for the finals in North America. He came on against Portugal and Colombia, then started the 3-1 win over Uzbekistan that sealed a last 32 place.
Sadiki kept his spot for DR Congo’s first ever World Cup knockout tie, and Brian Cipenga struck after seven minutes. England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, turned it around with two goals in 11 minutes from captain Harry Kane to set up a last 16 meeting with World Cup co-hosts Mexico.
Speaking after the defeat to England, Sadiki said: "It's a dream. I think every player has this dream as a kid, to play in games like this at the World Cup. I'm gutted that it's finished, but it's life and it's part of the journey. We have to grow from this and be ready for the next one. The win against Uzbekistan was a huge moment in our history. It showed what this team is capable of and gave everyone back home something to be proud of."
