Charlton Athletic midfielder Terry Taylor may have found a new long-term home in League One, just not at The Valley.

Taylor struggled for minutes under Nathan Jones at Charlton this season and was allowed to join Northampton on loan in January.

The move has since been a turning point for the Welshman, as he enjoyed a fruitful spell at Sixfields during the second half of the season.

According to FLW's Charlton fan pundit, Sam White, the 23-year-old is the most likely candidate for a summer exit after excelling on loan at Northampton Town.

Asked about who is most likely to be wanting out at recently promoted Charlton this summer, Sam mentioned the relative performance of Taylor compared to expectations.

"He came in with a decent amount of hype and experience but just hasn't managed to hold down a place in the squad," Sam explained.

"He has looked alright when he has played, but probably not at the level we needed."

In contrast, at Sixfields he has been a revelation. Since arriving at Northampton in January, Taylor has formed a fantastic partnership with Nottingham Forest loanee Ben Perry, and has re-found his form in League One through significant minutes under the guidance of Cobblers boss Kevin Nolan, leaving the door open to a permanent switch.

Sam believes a permanent switch makes sense for all parties, and that Charlton may not stand in the way of a move: "I imagine Northampton would want him back," he said.

"I could also see the club cancelling his contract, if not taking very minimal payment to get him off the books."

Charlton signed Taylor from Burton Albion in 2023, but he had failed to make a real impact at the club under Nathan Jones before his January 2025 loan move.

With Jones preferring other options in midfield, and Charlton preparing for life back in the Championship, Taylor's path back into the Addicks' setup looks blocked.

Multiple clubs tracking Taylor amid Charlton uncertainty

Even if Northampton hesitate, competition won't be lacking.

The former Wolves man was reportedly attracting interest from Stevenage, Shrewsbury Town, Cambridge United and Bolton Wanderers before his loan.

However, after proving to be a vital cog in Nolan's midfield, the Cobblers may carry an advantage in a possible race for a permanent deal.

While Charlton hold his contract, they may view this summer as a chance to move Taylor on, particularly if they're unable to offer regular first-team football.

Northampton, meanwhile, have seen first-hand how valuable he can be.

If they want to continue building under Kevin Nolan, few signings would send a stronger signal of ambition than landing Terry Taylor permanently.
