Enzo Maresca has just spoken in the press conference after Chelsea’s draw with Newcastle, and the Blues boss was asked about the tricky week he’s had.

After beating Everton a week ago, Maresca dropped a bombshell in his presser by saying he had had his “worst” 48 hours at Chelsea following the defeat to Atalanta, and calling out a lack of support from the club. The tension has been palpable ever since, with the coach asked about it at every opportunity and unable to move past it.

Enzo Maresca looks unhappy in a press conference after a win.

But in today’s presser, Maresca was in denial about this being a difficult time:

“My last week has not been complicated,” the manager said when asked how he had been coping with it all.

“It has been good. We beat Everton, we beat Cardiff and we drew Newcastle away. So in terms of results, I am happy. Again, there are things that for sure we can do better. But I think we are going in the right direction.”

It’s a real dodge of the question – nobody is talking about his week being difficult in terms of results. But what’s going on behind the scenes is clearly already taking its toll, and looks likely to get worse unless Maresca and those above him can get on the same page.

Good results will help dispel the tension – but draws won’t do the trick.

In other news…

Enzo Maresca praised Reece James for his work on and off the pitch after the full back scored the superb free kick which got Chelsea back into the game.

Alejandro Garnacho played his part in a hectic game, but his sheer inefficiency in the final third was very frustrating for fans.
