Hull City are back in the Premier League after beating Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Oli McBurnie scored the only goal of the game deep into stoppage time to hand the Tigers victory and a return to the top flight after ten years away.

It marks a remarkable turnaround for the Yorkshire outfit, who were on the brink of relegation to League One last season, surviving on the final day by goal difference as Luton Town dropped down to the third tier.

Hull, who were under a transfer embargo last summer, held on to their place in the play-offs with a win over Norwich City on the final day, ending a six-game winless run that threatened to derail their season.

They are the first team to finish sixth and earn Premier League promotion since Blackpool in 2010, while maintaining their 100 per cent record in play-off finals, this being their third victory.

Hull captain Lewie Coyle spoke about his late father, Chris, who was a well-known figure in the city before he died suddenly in 2022, after the final whistle.

“I don’t think this is something I’ll ever be able to sum up,” Coyle told BBC Radio Humberside.

“I thought about it all night last night, I
had a few interactions with my old man through the week, which I never really have.

“I’m not a big believer in stuff, but I actually went to a funeral Wednesday, I have a really good friend of mine, and something happened that day at the funeral, and I clung onto it.

“I said, ‘is that a way of my old man speaking to me?’ I thought about that a lot this week and I said it to the lads in the huddle before the game.

“I said we think about our why because that’s why we do this. That’s why we sacrifice what we do. And that’s why we sort of put ourselves in a position to go on and provide for our families.

“I just wanted no regrets no matter what would have happened today, I would have held my head up high, especially alongside these men.

“I actually don’t have a lot of self-belief in a lot of aspects of my life, but I had a weird feeling today that there was nothing stopping us, and I’m just so happy for the lads, so happy for the families.

“We all deserve this and I’ll say that I’ll go on record and say that this group of men deserve it more than anything. There’s some fantastic stories amongst this group of men, some heartbreaking stories.

“That’s what this team’s been built on this year, not football, a group of men that are willing to go that extra yard from. And yeah, we’ve got a special group.”
