Nottingham Forest have suffered a setback in their midfield search, with Inter ruling out a deadline-day move for Davide Frattesi.
The Reds want reinforcements for Sean Dyche’s squad before the window closes this evening, and central midfield is among the priorities.
Frattesi was linked last summer and, at one stage last month, a switch to the City Ground looked possible. Inter’s inability to secure Liverpool’s Curtis Jones as a replacement appears to have ended hopes of a deal. The 26-year-old now looks set to stay in Italy.
He started against Cremonese on Sunday, playing 60 minutes in a 2-0 Serie A win.
Asked if that signalled he would not be leaving, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said: “Yes, of course… We never want to hold back anyone who wants to leave. He’s never expressed this sentiment, which clearly means he’s happy with us. He’s proud of wanting more space, like everyone else, but he’ll have a chance to showcase his abilities, which are positive, during the season.” He was speaking to Sky Italia.
Forest are said to have had two bids rejected for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, and have also looked at Brighton and Hove Albion’s Yasin Ayari.
A striker and a left-back are also being pursued in the final hours. The club have until 7pm to finish business, having already added striker Lorenzo Lucca and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
