Nottingham Forest will face Fenerbahce in the Europa League knockout play-offs, with the ties on 19 and 26 February, the return at the City Ground. Celtic were paired with Bundesliga side Stuttgart.
A 4-0 victory over Ferencvaros on Thursday lifted Forest to 13th in the 36-team league phase, securing seeding. According to NY Times, these will be their first meetings with the Turkish Super Lig club.
If they advance, Forest will meet Real Betis or FC Midtjylland in the round of 16. They lost 3-2 to Midtjylland at home, then drew 2-2 away to Betis earlier in the campaign.
Celtic finished 21st after a 4-2 win against Utrecht and are again led by Martin O’Neill following Wilfried Nancy’s 33 days in charge. They drew 2-2 with Bologna despite playing most of that match with 10 men. Celtic and Forest sit on the same side of the bracket, so they could meet in the quarter-finals if both progress.
UEFA’s Giorgio Marchetti offered condolences to PAOK after seven fans died in a minibus crash in Romania, and PAOK drew Celta Vigo. Aston Villa, second in the league phase behind Lyon on goal difference, will learn their last-16 opponents after the play-offs, with PAOK, Celta Vigo, Lille or Crvena Zvezda possible.
