Nottingham Forest have reinstated goalkeeper Matz Sels to their Europa League squad before Thursday’s round of 16 first leg against FC Midtjylland at the City Ground, 20:00 kick-off. They travel to Denmark for the return next week.

The club said in a statement that Sels has been restored to the UEFA A list after recovering from a groin injury, with winter signing Stefan Ortega having previously taken his place for the play-off ties against Fenerbahçe.

Ortega started both matches against Fenerbahçe before sustaining a calf problem in the second leg. Sels then returned sooner than expected, starting against Brighton and Hove Albion, and featured in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City last Wednesday, Vitor Pereira’s first point as head coach.

Following Ortega’s setback, Forest discussed an early return with Sels, who accepted the risk to help the team despite needing more time to reach full fitness, with the medical staff involved in the decision.

Ortega arrived after an injury to summer recruit John Victor, who required knee surgery following the Aston Villa game in January and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Chris Wood and Nicolo Savona also remain sidelined with knee issues, with Savona a doubt to feature again this term and hopes that long-term absentee Wood could return next month.
