If one were to stop New York City FC fans in the street and ask how they feel about Wednesday’s win in Orlando, then they would probably express shock. The Pigeons were not playing well against Orlando City SC, and the fact that they came back and won the game in the end was absolutely insane. With that said, that does not mean the road problems will go away when the team continues their road trip against Sporting Kansas City.
Rather, the concerns are at an all-time high. NYCFC is truly lucky that they beat Orlando. The team was gifted the win thanks to an own goal and a missed tackle on the winning goal. But their poor play before the end of the game still occurred, and Pascal Jansen must address this in training. In addition, the Boys in Blue need to improve their starts since the last few starts on the road have been slow.
Meanwhile, Sporting KC did not play during the week, so they will have more rest compared to the visitors. On paper, NYCFC should be able to beat the Kansas side, for the team is in 12th place in the Western Conference with 23 points. While they might have six more goals in the regular season compared to the Pigeons, they have allowed 41 goals compared to the Bronx side only allowing 25.
Historically, Kansas City and NYCFC have only played six regular-season games. The Pigeons have a 3-2-1 record, so one team has not truly dominated the other. But the last loss came in 2016. So, can the Boys in Blue prevent Sporting KC from ending the four-match winless streak against them?

Mitja Ilenič was missing against Orlando and might not be available for the game in Kansas City. There are reports slowly emerging that he could be leaving the team this summer to return to Europe. It is slightly surprising since the young defender still has plenty of room to grow. However, splitting his time with Tayvon Gray could see him want a move elsewhere if it means starting all the time. This is something to watch closely.
