For the first time in nearly two decades, Real Madrid are preparing for a proper presidential election after the electoral board confirmed that the voting will take place on June 7, opening the door for members to decide who will lead the Spanish giants until 2030.

Current president Florentino Perez will once again stand for re-election, but unlike previous years, this time he will not walk unopposed.

This time, Enrique Riquelme has officially entered the race, setting up what is expected to be a widely discussed campaign in the coming days.

When will the election take place?

As confirmed by the club, voting will be held at the basketball pavilion inside Real Madrid City in Valdebebas, with club members able to cast their votes between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM.

The announcement marks a major moment in the club’s modern history, especially considering that Real Madrid have not experienced a genuine presidential election since 2006.

That election was won by Ramon Calderon following Florentino Perez’s resignation during his first spell as president.

Since returning to power in 2009, Perez has remained in control without facing a rival candidate in any election cycle.

That changed after the electoral board approved Riquelme’s candidacy earlier this week.

Perez already begins campaign push

The atmosphere around the club has already started to move following the confirmation of the election date.

As such, Perez wasted little time in beginning his campaign activities and used last weekend’s matchday at the Santiago Bernabeu to send a clear message to supporters.

A giant banner featuring the Real Madrid president was displayed alongside references to the seven European Cups won during his leadership era. The slogan on the display read, “Much history to be made.”

Meanwhile, Riquelme has also started increasing his public visibility by attending several social events linked to Madrid circles in recent days.

While Perez remains the overwhelming favourite due to his legacy and influence within the club, the emergence of an opponent has added a new twist to the situation.

The coming days are expected to bring more campaign activity from both sides as members begin evaluating the future direction of the club.
