In a concerning development, Real Madrid key defender Dean Huijsen has suffered a muscle injury and will be returning to the club from the Spain national team camp, the RFEF has confirmed.
“Dean Huijsen has been withdrawn from the Spain squad due to injury ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia in Elche and Bulgaria in Valladolid,” the press release from the RFEF read.
“The Real Madrid defender arrived at the national team camp on Monday night showing signs of muscle fatigue,” the statement continued.
“He did not train on Tuesday, and after his condition failed to improve, he underwent medical tests on Wednesday morning which confirmed a muscular injury.”
“Real Madrid have been informed, and Huijsen has been officially released from the squad. The RFEF wishes him a speedy recovery.”
Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Club has been called up as a replacement for Huijsen by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente.
Providing an update on the situation, journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Huijsen’s muscle injury is not seen as a serious issue.
Real Madrid staff will assess the central defender once he returns to the club and conduct tests to determine the extent of the injury.
It is expected that he could be out for a period of 1-2 weeks only, meaning Huijsen could be ready to play for Los Blancos soon after the international break ends.
