In a concerning development, Real Madrid have confirmed that captain and key defender Dani Carvajal has a soleus muscle injury in his leg.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a soleus injury in his right leg. Evolution pending,” the statement read.
Carvajal had returned to action not very long ago, having recovered from an ACL injury sustained last season.
However, the veteran right-back is now sidelined again with a calf problem he picked up during last night’s 5-2 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
Building on that, journalist Arancha Rodriguez states that Carvajal will be out for a period of four weeks.
Considering that Trent Alexander-Arnold is already out until November, this blow comes at the worst possible time for Real Madrid.
This means that Real Madrid will now be without a recognised first-team right-back for their upcoming matches against Kairat Almaty, Villarreal, Getafe, Juventus, and even the first El Clasico of the season against Barcelona on 26 October.
Raul Asencio has filled in at right-back in the past and could be an option, although Antonio Rudiger’s absence and Eder Militao’s potential injury would make his presence at centre-back necessary. A tough few weeks await Xabi Alonso.
