Manchester United have narrowed their striker search to two players, according to the reliable outlet The Athletic.
After one of the worst seasons in the club’s history in which scoring goals was arguably the most disappointing element of all, the Red Devils are determined to upgrade their attacking arsenal ahead of the new campaign.
They have already brought in two number 10’s, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but are still to add the jewel in the crown – a top class striker.
One thing that seemed to be in United’s favour at the start of the summer was the plethora of top strikers on the market. Their first target was undoubtedly Ipswich’s Liam Delap, who offered excellent value for money with his £30 million relegation release clause activated. However, he chose to go to Chelsea.
Viktor Gyokeres was another leading contender, but his preference was Arsenal. Victor Osimhen went to Galatasaray and Jonathan David to Juventus.
Another big target, Hugo Ekitike, was snapped up by Liverpool, while United reportedly decided they could not compete for Newcastle’s wantaway striker, Alexander Isak.
This left a few names, including Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig, Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, Nicholas Jackson of Chelsea, Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus and Randal Kolo Muani of PSG.
Fans have been left wondering who, if anyone, United are still pursuing. Finally, The Athletic have explained the situation.
Reporter Laurie Whitwell claims that United “had been exploring a deal for Nicolas Jackson but have ruled out a move for the Chelsea striker due to the cost.
“Sesko was an option United had held back from advancing, also due to the finances required, but talks have taken place to establish some details around a move. The same has occurred with Watkins.”
Whitwell admitted that it is still unclear which of the two stars is actually INEOS’ top target.
“United are still to determine who to pursue, although Ruben Amorim did confirm the Premier League experience of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo influenced their signings.” This suggests that the 29 year old Watkins could be the top choice despite Villa showing recalcitrance, at least in their public statements.
