On the up: Corinthians turn down Italian bid for goalkeeper Hugo Souza

According to information initially released by Lance!, Corinthians rejected an offer from Milan, Italy, for the signing of goalkeeper Hugo Souza, who has been one of the club's pillars since his arrival in July 2024. Additionally, according to the portal, other foreign teams inquired about the player's situation, but only the Milan team formalized a proposal.

The report also stated that the current Corinthians board considers the number 1 jersey as one of the main pieces of the squad and rejected Milan's offer because the amounts offered were considered below what the club deems ideal. The outlet also highlights that in the coming days, the Alvinegro is expected to receive other offers for the player.

The Corinthians leadership believes that Hugo Souza's dream of playing in the 2026 World Cup with the Brazilian National Team, led by Italian Carlo Ancelotti, is one of the triumphs for the athlete to remain in Brazilian football. The number 1 was a frequent name on the Amarelinha's call-up list in 2025.

Hugo Souza, who was permanently bought by Corinthians from Flamengo in November 2024 for R$ 4.8 million, has a contract with the club until December 2029 and has an international release clause of 100 million euros (over R$ 100 million). The Alvinegro holds 60% of his economic rights.

In the past season, before finalizing the player's purchase, the Alvinegro paid R$ 500,000 to the Rio team on three occasions so that the goalkeeper could face the Rubro-Negro, with whom he still had a contract (once in the second round of the Brasileirão and twice in the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil).

Milan, in turn, is interested in Hugo Souza precisely because the Frenchman Maignan, the Rossoneri's starting goalkeeper, has not yet renewed his contract, which expires in June 2026, with the Italian team. After winning the 2025 Copa do Brasil last Sunday (21) against Vasco, the number 1 gave an interview to GE TV and confirmed his stay at Corinthians: “I'm staying! I still have a long contract (with Corinthians).”

Lance! also reported that the goalkeeper sees a return to Europe favorably but has as his main goal the 2026 World Cup. Since mid-2024 – 90 games at Corinthians, the goalkeeper was crucial in the team's rise in the 2024 Brasileirão (from the relegation zone to the Pre-Libertadores), as well as in winning the 2025 Paulista Championship against Palmeiras and the 2025 Copa do Brasil against Vasco. In both, the Corinthians goalkeeper was decisive, especially in penalty shootouts.
