Ørjan Nyland returns to RB Leipzig on free transfer | OneFootball

RB Leipzig have re-signed Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland on a free transfer, the club said, with the 35-year-old agreeing a deal until 2028.

He replaces former captain Péter Gulácsi in the senior goalkeeping group after Gulácsi’s €2m move to Villarreal yesterday, and will act as deputy to Maarten Vandevoordt, with Leopold Zingerle also in the squad.

Nyland will wear the No. 1 shirt, though his role is clearly defined as backup. His familiarity with Leipzig helped the club move quickly after Gulácsi’s departure.

He previously spent 2022/23 at Leipzig, joining in October 2022 after Gulácsi’s serious knee injury. Nyland made three competitive appearances, two in the Bundesliga and one in a 3-1 DFB-Pokal round of 16 win over Hoffenheim, and was part of the cup-winning squad.

After leaving for Sevilla in summer 2023, he became the regular goalkeeper across his first two seasons and recorded 59 La Liga appearances. His involvement dropped last term, limited to five league games before his contract expired.

Strong Norway displays also influenced the move, as he started throughout their World Cup run to the quarter-finals and excelled against Brazil in the round of 16.
