Manchester City fans were greeted by the sight of Oscar Bobb returning to competitive match action on Sunday afternoon as he featured in Premier League 2 duties.
The Norway international has been sidelined for almost seven months having sustained a leg bone fracture prior to the start of the ongoing Premier League campaign last August – just weeks after putting in stellar performances throughout pre-season.
Bobb was Manchester City’s leading light in the United States at a time when the large majority of the club’s most senior first-team stars were recovering from extended duties with their respective national teams.
And while being lined up for a start against Chelsea on the opening weekend of the new campaign, Bobb sustained a fracture in his leg during a training session that would require surgery and leave him sidelined until early 2025.
An ankle problem during his recovery would then extend his concerns before the 21-year-old would return to on-field match duties, first via a friendly with the club’s reserve side and now in Premier League 2 action with the Elite Development Squad on Sunday.
Oscar Bobb was named in the club’s EDS starting line-up for the visit of Crystal Palace’s Under-21 set-up at the City Football Academy, alongside fellow first-team starlet Vitor Reis, as the Brazilian continues to acclimatise to English football.
As the Norway international continues to build-up his own match fitness and sharpness, the youngster has been excluded by his national team head coach from his latest selection ahead of contests in March following conversations with City boss Pep Guardiola.
Ståle Solbakken told reporters earlier this week, “We had a conversation with Guardiola; a full overview of what he’s done, zero games, little big games, but he’s at least in training. “He’s had a couple of setbacks, and it was a broken leg.
“Sometimes it takes longer than you hope. Manchester City can’t give him any free minutes either. They’re fighting for their lives for Champions League [qualification] – that will probably delay his comeback further.”
With Oscar Bobb back on the field in competitive action for Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad in their Premier League 2 clash against Crystal Palace’s Under-21 side on Sunday afternoon, here are a selection of photos from the Norwegian’s return.
This is a developing story. More to follow.
