Óscar García Junyent will coach Ajax’s under-23s after being approached by Jordi Cruyff.
According to Superdeporte, Cruyff, his former Barcelona team-mate who previously hired him at Maccabi Tel Aviv, has asked him to help lead the academy, with responsibility for the under-23 side.
The 52-year-old, a La Masia graduate, retired 20 years ago after spells with Valencia and Espanyol. Valencia signed him in 1999 for almost 5 million euros, then sold him a year later for 3.5 million. He scored four in 29 at Mestalla and later finished at Segunda side Lleida.
García started out coaching in Barcelona’s youth set-up, then won the league with Maccabi Tel Aviv. European interest brought him to Brighton. He returned to Israel a season later, left after four games, then took Watford, staying only weeks. Heart problems then forced a break from management.
In December 2015 he took RB Salzburg to two straight league and cup doubles across two seasons. Seeking new challenges, he has not added titles or completed a season in his subsequent roles. Since then he has worked in France, Greece, Mexico and the Netherlands, at St. Étienne, Olympiacos, Celta, Stade Reims, OH Leuvren and Chivas.
