Owen Oseni has been a temporary fix for Plymouth Argyle's lack of a starting striker.

The start of the season has been nothing but miserable for Plymouth Argyle, but a small positive is the recent emergence of Owen Oseni, who is currently nullifying Tom Cleverley's biggest headache.

There's no need to go over the story of Argyle's pursuit of a new number nine to succeed Ryan Hardie, and the multiple setbacks again, as it's already been well-documented throughout the summer transfer window.

The squad has begun the new campaign lacking quality in key areas, and the pressure is firmly on Chairman Simon Hallett to act after the Greens have lost all four of their opening games back in League One.

Whilst the defensive issues have been aided by the arrival of Alex Mitchell on loan from Charlton Athletic this week, we're still yet to see any progress or update in the search for a starting striker.

However, a £60k summer signing has stepped up recently to help temporarily ease that headache for Cleverley, which was beginning to turn into a migraine.

Owen Oseni's recent emergence a bright spark in dim Plymouth Argyle start

The start of the League One campaign has been far worse than any Argyle supporter would've hoped, as they're yet to get off the mark following four straight defeats, the first relegated club to do so since themselves in the 1956-57 season.

Despite this unwanted record-breaking start to the season, there have been a few bright sparks for the Devon-based outfit, which could suggest that brighter days aren't as far away as they may feel right now.

The main one has been the emergence of new striker Oseni, who joined Plymouth from Scottish outfit St Mirren over the summer, in a deal that was reported to be worth around £60k.

Whilst his record north of the border was less than impressive, he was brought in as a depth option to cover the new number nine. However, with that player's identity yet to be revealed, Oseni has found himself leading the line for his new club.

It's fair to say expectations weren't huge, but the Irishman has made a really steady start to life in Green, opening his account with a superb brace against Queens Park Rangers in the EFL Cup, before netting a consolation goal in a 3-2 defeat to Lincoln City.

With the focal point of Plymouth's struggles being made out as the lack of a starting striker, Oseni is certainly proving to be a competent and hungry temporary fix to Cleverley's huge transfer headache.

The one issue which will be on Tom Cleverley's radar

Whilst the recent emergence of Oseni is certainly a positive, it somewhat feels like paper over the cracks of how poor Plymouth's movement has been in the transfer market thus far.

Having missed out on two targets in Rumarn Burrell and Dale Taylor, Cleverley has been set back a number of weeks from where he would like to be, having still not found that number nine who will add a key piece to the jigsaw.

The Pilgrims have already added two strikers in Oseni and Bim Pepple, but both will be fully aware that they weren't signed to be the striker who will lead the line week-in-week-out.

Whilst the 22-year-old is providing a temporary painkiller for his head coach's headache with his recent goals, relying on the Irishman as an outlet for goals is only going to be sustainable for a short period of time.

Oseni is still a young player with minimal EFL experience, and thrusting him into the deep end by expecting him to be the starting striker for a club where the pressure and expectation is so high could be disastrous for his confidence if things don't go well.

His emergence is certainly a positive thing for the Pilgrims, and will buy them a little bit more time to find the right Hardie replacement, but they must be careful not to heap too much pressure on his young shoulders too quickly.
